호주프로야구(ABL)를 소개합니다!! / Introduction of ABL(Australian Baseball League)!!

Hello, guys! Welcome to my ‘Aussie baseball’ channel. I am going to introduce origin of Australian baseball and history. Also, this video will cover the introduction of Australian baseball league When it comes to Australia, what would you think of? Kangaroo? Koala? Working Holiday? Beef? Opera House in Sydney? By the way, did you know that professional baseball league is existing in Australia? I will begin introduction of Australian Baseball League from now on. First of all, baseball was brought in Australia in 1850s, when the Australian gold rush began. significant amount of gold had been discovered in Victoria and New south wales states. As a consequence, it led a number of countries such as China, America, Europe and so on to jump in Australian gold rush. And baseball had been played for the first time by miner from America. After that, according to historical record, cricket players had played baseball at the yarra park in 1867. In fact, baseball has been introduced in Australia earlier than Korea where baseball had been introduced by American missionaries in 1905. In Australia, there is a number of local baseball club established a long time ago. In Victoria state where I am staying, there is the oldest local baseball club in saint kilda. Saint kilda baseball club was established in 1879. There are 3 more clubs established in the late 1800s and the most of the remainder is established in the early and mid 1900s. As you can see the things I have introduced so far, baseball has been played in Australia a long time ago. However, it wasn’t long that professional baseball league in Australia has been settled down and well-equipped. ABL is the abbreviation for Australian Baseball League. Actually, ABL had existed from 1989 to 1999. it was ceased due to issue on finiancne. In 2009 , professional baseball league had been resumed with inherited the prior league’s name ‘ABL’. As the season of Australia located in the Southern hemisphere is opposite from the northern hemisphere, A significant number of baseball players from countries in the northern hemisphere such as Korea, Japan, US, Taiwan, Europe and so on contract with ABL’s teams during off-season in the northern hemisphere.. A majority of imported players are prospect of northern league’s teams or the players who didn’t appear enough games due to injury. Therefore, it can be called ‘Instructive League’. So, high proportion of players are imported player in ABL’s teams. It can be concerned that ABL’s teams are a bit rely on overseas players. What would you think of ABL’s standard? In comparison with MLB, generally speaking, Japanese baseball league is Tripple A, Korean Baseball League is around Double A and TrippleA ABL which is regarded as a lower league compare to the NPB and KBO is around Single-A and Double-A. However, it is believed that ABL is the most advanced league and considered as fastest-growing baseball league out of the winter league located in the southern hemisphere. Therefore, a lot of high-level of players are being imported to ABL. So, I believe that standard of ABL would be increase rapidly. Let’s have a look the players who have had played in ABL. First of all, korean Submariner, Byung-hyun Kim. It had formed an attractive subject of conversation that he’d contracted with Melbourne Aces. After he end his tremendous baseball career with Melbourne, he is being active in running his hamburger restaurant business, commentator and commentator and broadcast activity. LOL I have met him so many time while I was working in Melbourne Aces in 2018 as an intern of Baseball Australia. He was really kind. personally, he is my favorite player and my hero. Next, Seattle Mariners’ kikuchi yusei 2018 National League Rookie of the Year Award, Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr The key shortstop player in New York Yankees, Didi Gregorius. Super sociable player in Tampa Bay, Ji-man Choi The legend of Hanwha Eagles, Dae-Sung Koo And Hei-Chun Lee Moving on, Let’s have a look ABL’s Teams and league and playoff schedule. There are 8 teams in ABL. In 2018, Geelong-Korea that most of the korean baseball fans may know and Auckland Tuatara were established. As these 2 teams have been added in ABL, in the North East Division, Auckland Tuatara, Brisbane Bandits, Canberra Cavalry and Sydney Bluesox. and in the South West Division, Adelaide Giants, Geelong Korea, Melbourne Aces and Perth Heat So in total, 8 teams! Each teams leave on a Journey with 40 games from on November to January. The method of playoff progress is big different from Korea. Only 5 teams can get the qualifications for playoffs and the winner is decided on 3th February. Let me explain how 5 teams are selected. The first seed team is the team having highest overall winning percentage in whole teams. The second seed team is the second-placed team from a division where the first seed team is in. Third and Fourth seed teams are the first and second-placed teams in the other division. The fifth seed team is the next highest overall winning percentage except for #1 to #4 team and #5 seed team will be qualified for the wild card game. The wild card game, the first game of the play-off since the end of the season, will be played by the #4 and #5 seed teams with one-round match. The winner from Wild card is qualified for semi-final 1 and play against #1 seed team. semi-final 2 will be played by #2 and #3 seed teams and the winners from each semi-final will be qualified for ABL championship series. Both semi-final and ABL Championship series are three games for 2 wins. To help your understanding, I will explain by using example of result of ABL in 2018/19 season. If you look at the overall winning percentage of the top teams in two division, the brisbane in Northeast division is 0.625 ahead of Perth in Southwest division. So, #1 seed teams must be Brisbane and Sydney, the second-placed team in the Northeast division like Brisbane, must be #2 seed team. However, as you can see the table, the overall winning percentages of Brisbane and Sydney are same. In these case, it is required to have a look at head-to-head record. As each two teams won 4 out of 8 games, Still, there is a difficulty of decision despite comparison of head-to-head record. The next alternative solution is a comparison of the overall winning percentage based on the result of the game only in the division where these two teams belong to. According to 2018/19 record, Brisbane is 14 wins 10 loses and Sydney is 12 wins 12 loses. As a result, Brisbane is the #1 seed team. Obviously, #3 seed team is Perth and #4 seed team is Melbourne. As I stated previously, the #5 seed team is the next highest overall winning percentage except for #1 to #4 team. So, #5 is Canberra. Let’s have a look at the result of play-off in 2018/19 season. Wild card game is played by Melbourne,#4, and Canberra,#5. As a result, Canberra won 5-0 and it caused that Canberra advanced to the Semi-final 1 to play against Brisbane,#1. And Brisbane advanced to ABL Championship series with 2wins 1 lose against Canberra. In Semi-final 2, Perth,#3, advanced to final with 2 wins 1 lose against Sydney,#2. Eventually, Brisbane ended up winning the ABL Championship series in 2018/19 season with 2 wins against Perth. Have you guys enjoyed this video? I made this video with a view of thinking that ABL would be more enjoyable for Korean baseball fan if they have knowledge of ABL or Australian baseball. I really appreciate that you spend your time to watch my video
