[APPLAUSE]>>well, they have a little bit of I’d say a thorn stuck in their cross. they want revenge. deep down in the regular season match to win the conference, they need to rally, rally, rally, play great defense and keep the ball going back and forth.>>the champions last year, the knights, they’re number one and they’ve already done this already.>>well, you would think so, but it’s the state championship. they need to use their senior leadership. their seniors are all league players, they’ve been on the floor a few times. they know what it takes. and now here’s our first look at Petersen. Petersen, a junior, her sister Sydney Petersen number eight, daughter of head coach Petersen. don’t miss Madison Lavenz, the outside hitter and we see the replay here.>>well, what a great shot. she wasn’t in a great position, so she did a nice role shot, kind of to that corner.>>a lot of service errors in the 5A match, finally had a chance to defeat the centennials, the first we saw in the match. up by Petersen. union to the outside.>>Petersen is in the state, probably the best defensive player, and she’s being highly recruited, getting looks from top division one teams and hasn’t made her decision yet, but it will be exciting to know where she goes. of course, a lot of us want her to stay close to home so we can watch her when she played for her mother, but that decision hasn’t made yet.>>I don’t think I made my decision well into my senior year.>>a lot of college coaches put pressure on kids pretty early on.>>look around the arena, you see so many college coaches at all levels, junior college, division 3, division 2, division 1, state of Iowa, a lot of viewers tuning in to see some top talent. great rally. the ball was touched by union and guide three apiece. this is Petersen. union, back to the block, at the test, bring her in on that. the sophomore Hudson, the senior.>>and Hartford’s block was well formed that type. both blockers were right there. arms together, they jumped at the same time. she just powered that ball through the block. Hudson leaves the team in kills, 542 of them. here’s a block on the near sideline. a quick side out and amber Rickert, the top out hitter at 231 kills at the state tournament. the surfer, Hartford.>>we should talk about Eden. she’s had three concussions this year. she wears head protection to help from if a ball, hit her in the head or something like that, she hit her head on the floor. you know, volleyball can be a very tip — physical sport as well as others where there’s physical body contact.>>well, it’s pretty impressive. that may be the case, but in a state tournament, she’s had a major role. she’s come in and served a lot of balls.>>in the regular season.>>it shows the confidence that the coach has in her. put her in after only 10 sets in the state tournament all throughout the tournament. 65 is whereabouts early going, feeling each other out here as the 3A match just under way. both to the NICL conference side of that conference.>>if you look at that, what Hartford does is they want a quick offense. one of the ways to speed up the offense. anytime the ball comes over in a free ball or type of pass, they shoot that ball up to a line drive type of pass to speed up that offense.>>big swing, now for the kill. Petersen, Hartford, it is so hard that it went actually out of bound on the opposite side. you know you’re bringing the heat when that happens. one of the best seniors coming into this tournament, second on the team in kills with 436, averaging 4.32 kills per set.>>and she’ll be playing at college next year so I’m sure they’re excited that she’s here, as well.>>tried to cut that one. sails out of bound. union with the point, trailing just by one and the chance to score more as Nolan is serving. the players run into each other out of bound and the run continues for union.>>well, in this communication may have been partly because those two aren’t used to playing together. like you had, Eden has only played the ten sets before this big tournament. they just need to make sure they talk about it, call it loudly, and let — anytime you have it, if it’s ball control, let LeVert take control.>>what a smart decision here. he comes flying in and then.>>a little change-up.>>put the role shot came off instead.>>she did a good job of disguising it. that’s one of the keys. when you’re in that position, you want to make sure when you go to attack, it looks the same, whatever you’re going to do, go up hard like you’re going to hammer it and then make your decision.>>they got the side outside, first in double digits. they lead 10-8 which led the 25 went by two. the first of potentially 5 sets here in this class 3A championship match. another point. the senior who had 188 kills to the end of this.>>the timing was off a little bit between Durnin and hedges, but she was still able to get a hand on it which sometimes works in your favorite like that time you could just tip it out of the block.>>another point off the hands of union and union calls their first timeout in 12 games in favor of new Hartford. the replay and the sell wrings, a lot of coaching going on right now inside the Hartford huddle.>>that pasand transition, give yourself room to work, okay? be ready for a release, something like that. you’re talking to each other keep going.>>Diane harms, 14 years, listen to this record. 521 wins, 93 losses. it’s her 21st year and she overall has 786 wins, just 187 losses, 11 appearances she’s had at the state tournament and four state championship titles.>>she inherited a great program. it is hard to maintain that level through and she’s done that for 14 years and done a tremendous job. those four state championships were were in a row. she’s done a remarkable job. you’ve got to give her a lot of credit for where this program is a 5-0 run and this is after union went on. you see Hartford in this volleyball. momentum run.>>yeah, you of course always want your team to score a bunch of points and you always want to stop the other team from scoring a bunch of points, but that’s kind of the pendulum of the momentum to swing back and forth.>>ninth, tenth, and this rotation seems to be looking really good for new Hartford right now. another service and now 15-8.>>well, and that is 6 points that she’s scored off her serve, amber Rickert. she’s out here on a 7-point run.>>union, desperately looking for a side out right here.>>what a great block.>>and wide open, the whole defense is creeping up close to the net. and Petersen goes out for the kill. no one back home in the back row and the second and final timeout called by union. let’s see what they’re talking about in their huddle.>>let’s throw the ball around a little bit here a little more.>>we’ve got plenty of game.>>plenty of game. we’ll get it going here. we’ve got time. they definitely have a lot of space on their team. one of the questions we asked them if they have tricked up their sleeves, if something starts going wrong. and this is a response we had a very interesting response and a lot of coaches have players that can play all different conditions. they’ll push their players around to mix things oplittle bit and new Hartford guess something to Petersen leading the way with five kills. 13 kills already. and here we see a substitution by anything to get a timeout. this is Haley ground and she’ll go in back to serve and replace Jasmyn bush: beautiful block. doesn’t want to hit the course. pushing into the back row, and finally a side out but not after a huge run to go up 16-10. let’s see if they can answer. nice block. they’ll go at Petersen again, and that ball down for a point. there’s a lot of different options when she’s up there hit something to she sure does. she’s been playing volleyball all her life. like you had, she’s the daughter of UNI coach bobby Petersen. she’s grown up in the gym, has watched a lot of volleyball and can kind of emulate those things she’s seen her mom’s team do.>>they’re trying to dig deep here and must arrun. partner with the kill. she gets to go back to serve. the points have been hard to come by for a union. there’s one. she gets the kill and now backs it up to that point with the service aid.>>and for those of you watching who may not have watched volleyball for a while. a net serve udto be an out serve, but it can now hit the ball on the serve and a ball that goes overis playable. in my day, I would have stopped that one. and that’s the point, I didn’t tell returned but not in town.>>and that’s great communication. Petersen was there ready to play it and wanted to, but her teammate yelled out out out out out and so she quickly got out of the way to let the ball bounce.>>so communication is important in this port?>>just a little bit. you know, 6 people in 900 feet, you’ve got to make sure you make yourself heard.>>and Jackie Barz, the senior. real quick offense. RETURNS IT. SO WHEN YOU JUMP, YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WHEN YOUR ARM’S EXTENDED AS FAR AS IT CAN, YOU’RE HITTING THE BALL AS HIGH UP AS POSSIBLE AND SHE DOES A REALLY GOOD JOB OF THAT AND SOMETIMES SO GOOD THAT IT GOES OVER THE BLOCK.>>OVER THE BLOCK THAT TIME, BUT OUT OF BOUNDS. THANKS TO HARTFORD, THERE’S A TIMEOUT. THEY LEAD BY SIX IN JUST FIVE MORE POINTS TO TAKE THIS OPENING SET. PETERSEN TO SERVE. SYDNEY –.>>BAYLEE AND SYDNEY ARE TWINS, NOT IDENTICAL, BUT THEY’RE TWINS.>>POINT TO END AND MAKE SURE THAT DIKE DOESN’T GO ON A RUN HERE. THE SIDE OUT AND HERE’S MAGGIE DRISCOL.>>WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN MEAN TO AN OFFENSE AND OF COURSE I’M BIASED BECAUSE I’M A FORMER MIDDLE, BUT THAT SHOWED PERFECTLY. SHE WAS UP QUICK A BETTER BATTER TO THE BALL, THEREOF NO WAY THEY COULD GET MORE THAN ONE BLOCKER ON HER SO SHE WAS ABLE TO HIT WHATEVER SHE WANTED AND PUT THAT BALL AWAY PAINFULLY.>>FOURTH KILL HERE FOR MADISON LAVENZ, THE OUTSIDE HITTER FOR HARTFORD. CLOSING THE END OF THIS OPENING SET FOR THE CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP HERE IN CEDAR RAPIDS. UNION IN THE BLACK TOPS. THAT’S HARTFORD IN THE WHITE UNIFORM.>>THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL ALL THE WAY AROUND A BEAUTIFUL QUICK SET A BEAUTIFUL HIT A BEAUTIFUL BLOCK. ONE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE HIT ON THAT WAS SHE TRIED TO HIT IT STRAIGHT DOWN. WHEN YOU TRY AND HIT IT STRAIGHT DOWN, THE BLOCKER ONLY HAS TO GET ABOUT THREE INCHES OVER THE NET. SO SOMETIMES YOU WANT TO TRY AND AIM FOR THE BACK 5 FEET OF THE COURT BECAUSE YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING IT OVER THE BLACK RATHER THAN GETTING A BLOCK.>>HARVEY WITH THE KILL, HER FIRST. TRYING TO GET SOME MOMENTUM HEADING INTO THIS SECOND SET. THERE’S ANOTHER POINT. LET’S GO TO OUR NET CAMERA AND SEE HOW THIS ONE UNFOLDS.>>PRETTY GOOD. I MEAN, THE HANDS WERE PUSHED OVER THE NET A LITTLE BIT. THE ARMS COULD BE EXTENDED A LITTLE MORE OVER THE NET, KIND OF LIKE THE ROOF OF A HOUSE, BUT IT WORKS.>>GREAT ANALYSIS FROM BART RANDALL, FORMER ALL AMERICAN OF UNIVERSITY OF IOWA. SHE WAS ALSO CONDUCTED INTO THE VOLLEYBALL HALL OF FAME HERE ENIOWA. CONGRATULATIONS TO HANDA, BEING INDUCTED BEFORE THIS 3A MATCH. 23-17 AND HARTFORD PRETTY MUCH HAS THE LEAD AND CONTROL, UP BY A COUPLE OF POINTS HERE THIS ENTIRE OPENING SET, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY WENT ON THAT RUN TO WIDEN THE GAP. BEAUTIFUL BLOCK.>>GREAT COVERAGE ON THAT, TOO.>>QUICK SET. BEAUTIFUL BLOCK. OFF THE HAND, DOWN TO THE POINT FOR UNION. GOOD BLOCKING AND GET A LITTLE CREATIVE. HOW DO I GET IT THROUGH OR AROUND OR OVER THAT BLOCK.>>WELL, ONE OF THE THINGS — HARTFORD IS NOT VERY BIG. THEY’RE 5-7, 5-7, 5-5, 5-8, JUST NOT VERY BIG. BUT THEY GET A LOT OF BLOCKS AND A LOT OF TOUCHES. THEY’RE TRYING TO HIT IT STRAIGHT DOWN RATHER THAN AT A STEEPER ANGLE THAT WOULDN’T NECESSARILY BE TOUCHED BY JUST A FEW INCHES OVER THE NET.>>SET POINT FOR NEW HARTFORD. AMBER RICKERT, A SOPHOMORE FOR NEW HARTFORD. UNION, GOOD SWING. AND THE BLOCK. AND DIKE NEW HARTFORD WINS THE POINT AND THEY WIN FINAL SCORE, 25-18 BUT WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED. YOU GOT TO WIN THREE TO WIN THE MATCH AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP. BACK WITH MORE RIGHT AFTER THIS. .>>>EVERY WAR HAS SUICIDE MISSIONS AND MAKE NO MISTAKE. THIS IS WAR. YOU’RE NOT A SOLDIER. JOIN IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION FOR FESTIVAL, A NEW TRADITION, NOVEMBER 19TH AND 20TH AND 26TH THROUGH THE 28TH.>>SURELY, YOU HAVE GENES FOR GETTING INTO TROUBLE.>>HOW DARE YOU.>>PROMISE TO BE CAREFUL?>>DON’T WORRY. I’LL MAKE YOU THREE MORE.>>HANNAH GREEN GABLES, LIGHT OUT, YOUNG LADY.>>A NEW VERSION OF AN OLD FAVORITE, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24TH.>>>THAT HELPED THEM WIN THE OPENING SET 25-18 OVER UNION. WE CAUGHT UP WITH DIKE-NEW HARTFORD MADISON LAVENZ AFTER THE SEMIFINAL VICTORY TO GET THEIR THOUGHTS HEADING INTO THIS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH.>>>I THINK THAT WE HAVE A LOT MORE CHEMISTRY THIS YEAR AND WE ALL GET ALONG VERY, VERY WELL, AND WE ALSO HAVE NOT JUST ONE PLAYER THAT GETS ALL THE KILLS. WE HAVE A LOT OF DIVERSITY AND A LOT OF KID ON THE TEAM THAT CAN JUST GET THE KILLS FOR EVERYONE.>>EVERY YEAR, THEY CAME DOWN WITH A DIFFERENT GROUP OF GIRLS AND FOR THE SENIORS, THEY DON’T WANT TO END THEIR SENIOR YEAR WITHOUT FINISHING UP THE STATE TOURNAMENT AND FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN, IT’S THEIR FIRST OPPORTUNITY. SO WITH THE NEW MIX EVERY YEAR, YOU HAVE THAT NEW EXCITEMENT EVERY YEAR TRYING TO GET BACK DOWN HERE TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT.>>WE KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO BE AN ENTERTAINING 3A MATCH. YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT OPENING SET?>>WOW, WHAT A GREAT MATCH. I’M A LITTLE SURPRISED THAT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WON SO EASILY, SO IT SHOULD BE A GREAT SECOND SET.>>REMEMBER WHEN THEY FACED OFF EARLIER IN THE CONFERENCE, WITH UNION WINNING. SO UNION IS RANKED NUMBER ONE IN 3A. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS RANKED NUMBER 2. 17 KILLS FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IN THE OPENING SET, JUST 10 FOR UNION. 15 DIGS FOR DIKES, 8 FOR UNION. 3 BLOCKS FOR DIKES, 1 BLOCK FOR UNION. SO WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN AND START 0-0 HERE IN THE SECOND SET, BUT DIKES DOES GET THAT FIRST POINT. AND NOW A CHANCE TO SWITCH SIDES WITH DIKES ON THE LEFT OF YOUR TV SCREEN AND UNION ON THE RIGHT. UNION PICKS ONE UP AND NOW AT 1 APIECEF.>>THAT WAS A GREAT ANGLE. SHE USED THAT VERY DEEP GOLDEN CORNER. PROBABLY DIDN’T NEED TO GO THAT DEEP, BUT IT WAS IN AND IT WAS A PERFECTLY PLACED SHOT.>>SERVICE THERE GOOD JOB ON LETTING THAT BALL SAIL. THEY SAID WE KNOW A LOT ABOUT EACH OTHER. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS A VERY DISCIPLINED TEAM THAT MAKES VERY FEW ERRORS. AND OBVIOUSLY, YOUR OPPONENTS CANNOT TAKE ADVANTAGE IF YOU DON’T COMMIT ERRORS. AND RIGHT NOW, 2-1. AND PETERSEN TO SERVE. A LITTLE JOUST IN THE NET AND THEY’RE GOING TO SAY THAT WAS DIKES-NEW HARTFORD AND THERE’S A TIMEOUT.>>ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES BAYLEE PETERSEN’S SERVE TOUGHER IS IT’S HARD TO SEE FROM THE SIDE ANGLE. FROM THE END ANGLE, IT LOOKS LIKE A STRAIGHT SERVE BUT IT TAKE AS LITTLE CURVE OFF TO THE LEFT WHEN YOU’RE LOOKING AT IT FROM THE SERVER’S LINE AND THAT MAKES IT A LITTLE HARDER TO PASS. THE BALL ROTATION AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT IS THE THREE-BALL ROTATION AND THE PLAYERS DOING THE BALL ROTATION ARE LOCAL PLAYERS THAT DIDN’T QUALIFY FOR STATE. THEY GET TO — COACHES VOLUNTEER THEIR TEAM AND THEY GET TO COME WORK AT THE STATE, WATCH THE TOURNAMENT, DREAM ABOUT BEING HERE NEXT YEAR AND THEY USE THE THREE-BALL ROTATIONS SO THE SERVER HAS THE BALL AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT VERY LONG.>>RUNNING OUT ON THE RED CARPET, GREAT FOLKS.>>AND THAT’S NEW. SO THAT SMOKE AND SOME OF THE THINGS THEY’RE DOING THIS YEAR IS NEW BECAUSE THE IOWA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS GAMING HAA NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND SHE’S A CHAMPION FOR GIRLS SPORTS. SHE WANTS TO MAKE THIS A REALLY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE, WANTS GIRLS TO REMEMBER IT FOREVER AND SO SHE’S DOING A LOT TO BRAND THE IOWA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC UNION. YOU’LL SEE A LOT MORE OF THE HOT PINK COLOR AROUND. THE WINNERS OF EACH MATCH GET PINK T-SHIRTS THAT SAY STATE CHAMPION. SHE’S REALLY DOING A LOT TO BUILD THAT BRAND AND WE’LL SEE MORE OF IT IN THE YEARS TO COME.>>JEAN BURGER, UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA, TAKING OVER. AT THE START OF THE FALL. 6-4, DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WITH THE EARLY ADVANTAGE HERE. THESE TWO TEAMS ARE FROM THE SAME CONFERENCE, TWO SCHOOLS ARE ONLY ABOUT A HALF HOUR AWAY FROM EACH OTHER AND THIS CONFERENCE IS INCREDIBLE. NICL COMPETES FOUR OF THE SIX VOLLEYBALL FINALISTS, 1A, 2A, AND 3A CAME OUT OF NICLE, FOUR OF THE SIX FINALISTS. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD AND UNION PLAYING NOW, HUDSON IN 2A, AND A TEAM IN THE 1A. AND IT WAS THE ONLY LOSS THAT HARTFORD HAD IN CONFERENCE PLAY.>>WELL, THAT AREA OF THE STATE IS VERY POWERFUL. 4 OF THE SIX GAMES FROM THAT CONFERENCE ARE TEN FINALIST. WE HAVE CEDAR FALLS IN 5 DAYS, AND THEN THE HUDSON FINALS IN 1A ALL FROM THE WATERLOO CEDAR FALLS AREA, WHICH IS AMAZE SOMETHING TO IT’S ABOUT 20 MILES FROM THE UNI CAMPUS TO GET TO SIX OF THE SCHOOLS COMPETING FOR STATE TITLE HERE TODAY. 7-6 IS THE SCORE HERE IN THE SECOND SET. A LOT OF TENSE MOMENTS UNFOLDING HERE AS UNION DOES NOT WANT TO FALL BEHIND TWO SETS TO ZERO.>>SO A PERSON IN THE BACK ROW CANNOT ATTACK THE BALL IN FRONT OF THAT 10-FOOT LINE YOU SEE GOING THROUGH THE COURT IF THEY’RE ABOVE THE HEIGHT OF THE NET.>>DIRECTLY INTO THE NET SAILS THE VOLLEYBALL AND THAT SERVE IS HELD. SO PRETTY INTERESTING. THIS IS LITERALLY A REMATCH OF THE NICLE’S CONFERENCE.>>I DIDN’T TELL A REMATCH FOR THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND JUST ALSO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.>>CHAMPIONS ALREADY AWARDED TODAY WERE CENTENNIAL, RANKED NUMBER ONE IN THE STATE HAVE ALREADY LOCKED THE 5A AND 4A RIGHT NOW. AND RIGHT NOW, THE RANKED NUMBER ONE IN 3A TRAILING ONE SET TO ONE AGAINST NUMBER TWO RANKED DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. CARLEE DOVE, THE SOPHOMORE.>>SHE’S THE ONLY PLAYER OUT OF THE NEW HARTFORD TEAM THAT’S OVER 6 FOOT. SHE’S 6-1.>>POWERFUL ATTACK, BUT IT’S RETURNED AND IT’S GOING TO BE A POINT FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. LOOK OUT. HERE’S THE RUN AND UNION DOES NOT WANT TO SEE THE RUN CONTINUE. BRYAN JESSE TEN YEARS AS THE HEAD COACH, SEVENTH YEAR AT UNION CALLS A TIMEOUT.>>YOU GUYS NEED TO PRESS BACK IN. KEEP FIGHTING.>>SO BARB IS A FORMER VOLLEYBALL, BEING AGGRESSIVE ON THIS STAGE IS PRETTY IMPORTANT.>>IT’S VERY IMPORTANT, BUT IT DEPEND ON THE SITUATION. IF YOU’RE WAY BEHIND AND CAN’T GET ANYTHING ROLLING, SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED TO GET YOUR RHYTHM GOING. BUT YEAH, AGGRESSIVE IS IN MY BOOK, ALMOST ALWAYS BETTER THAN NOT BEING AGGRESSIVE. AGGRESSIVE IS SMART, LET’S JUST SAY.>>LET’S SEE IF PETERSEN CAN BE AGGRESSIVE WITH THE SCORE. LEADING BY FOUR, DIKES-NEW HARTFORD, PERFECT PLACEMENT. WOW. HARD TO COVER EVERY INCH OF THE VOLLEYBALL COURT AND THAT ONE WAS LEFT WIDE OPEN. GOOD VISION AND NICE EXECUTION.>>HERE WE GO. DOWN FOR THE KILL. 12-8 AFTER THE 10TH KILL FOR PETERSEN. HERE’S ANOTHER LOOK. BAYLEE PETERSEN ALREADY IN DOUBLE DIGITS AND THE ONLY PLAYER IN DOUBLE DIDN’T KILLS ALREADY.>>IT LOOKED LIKE ON THAT PLAY UNION WAS IN A ROTATION DEFENSE WHICH BASICALLY COVERS THOSE GOLDEN CORNERS AND OPENS UP THE MIDDLE BACK OF THE COURT, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHERE PETERSEN HIT IT.>>GOOD SERVE. QUICK SET. AND A CHANCE TO BUILD ON IT. FIVE KILLS ALREADY FOR DURNIN. BACK SET, SLIDE. AND DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WITH THE POINT AND UNION WITH THEIR SECOND AND FINAL TIMEOUT. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD LEADS BY 7. HERE’S WHAT UNION HAS TO SAY.>>GET THE SWING. BACK ROW, YOU GUYS HAVE GOT TO HAVE BALANCE. YOU’VE GOT TO MOVE IT. LET’S GET ONTO IT.>>BRYAN JESSE DOING AN INCREDIBLE JOB IN HIS 7TH YEAR OF LEADING UNION. WHAT HAS HE DONE IN 7 YEARS? TAKEN THEM TO STATE TOURNAMENTS 6 TIMES. AND HE PLAYED A REAL COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE. 20-4 TO LINMAR, CENTENNIAL, CENTENNIAL, AND MT. VERNON.>>ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN, DIKES-NEW HARTFORD HAS FIVE LOSSES.>>SOUNDS FAMILIAR.>>ALL STATE QUALIFIERS.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD BEND TO CEDAR FALLS. STATE RUN, 5A TWICE TO BEAT CENTENNIAL, STATE CHAMPION 1. IOWA, U.S., AND LINMAR.>>YOU HEARD COACH HARMS TALKING ABOUT THEY’RE BLOCKING ARMS NEED TO BE PUSHED MORE THAN STRAIGHT UP, AND THEY’RE WORKING ON THAT. YOU CAN SEE FROM THE REPLAY ON THE BLOCK, THEY’RE WORKING ON THAT. THEY’RE NOT QUITE AS PUSHED OVER AS THEY CAN GET, BUT THEY’RE WORKING ON IT.>>A 6-0 RUN FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. DIALLED UP A PERFECT SERVE, AND NOW A DOUBLE DIGIT LEAD FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. ABOUT TEN KILLS AND THREE AGES TO GO ALONG WITH IT FOR BAYLEE PETERSEN. AND WE SAW A BIG RUN IN THE FIRST SET FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD AND NOW A BIG RUN HERE.>>AND TWO DIFFERENT SERVERS. IN THE FIRST SET, IT WAS RICKERT AND NOW IT’S BAYLEE PETERSEN.>>THERE’S THE BLOCK THEY’RE LOOKING FOR AND DESPERATELY NEEDING TO SIDE OUT. AND NOW TIME FOR UNION TO GO ON A RUN.>>WELL, EVEN THOUGH DIKES-NEW HARTFORD LOST TO UNION IN THE REGULAR SEASON, THEY STILL BELIEVED THEY COULD WIN TODAY. WE TALKED WITH SOME OF THE PLAYERS AFTER THE MATCH TODAY. THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANY FEAR ABOUT GOING INTO THIS MATCH TO PLAY UNION.>>THEY WANTED IT.>>ABSOLUTELY. THEY KNEW THEY COULD GET A REMATCH AND POTENTIALLY A WIN OUT OF THIS.>>THEY WIN THAT POINT, PUTTING THEM ONE STEP CLOSER. LET’S GO TO OUR NET CAM.>>OH, THAT’S MUCH BETTER. SO AS WE TALK ABOUT THAT ANGLE OVER THE NET, THAT ONE, ACTUALLY, ALL FOUR ARMS, BOTH BLOCKER ARMS WERE PUSHED OVER. THEY STILL COULD BE HELPED A LITTLE LONGER, BUT THAT WAS — IT’S GETTING BETTER EACH TIME WE LOOK AT IT.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WINS THE FIRST SET 25-18 AND THEY ARE IMPROVING. THEY LOOK EVEN MORE SHARP, EVEN MORE FOCUSED, EVEN MORE DOMINANT HERE IN THE SECOND SET UP 21-9. AND WE’VE WATCHED BAYLEE PETERSEN GET A BUNCH OF SERVES, NOW SYDNEY PETERSEN ON A ROLL OF SCORING THREE POINTS WITH AN ACE RIGHT THERE. IF SHE CAN DO IT, I WANT TO DO IT. THAT’S HOW TWINS GO, RIGHT?>>VERY COMPETITIVE. BUT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD BLOCK IS NOT PERFECT ON THAT EXECUTION AND THE KILL FOR BRI HARVEY. HARVEY IS SENIOR LEADS THE TEAM IN BLOCKS. OTHER SENIOR LEADER CIERRA NOLAN, MAGGIE DRISCOL, MEGAN HUDSON, JACKIE BARZ, AND, SIX SENIORS TRYING TO END THEIR HIGHS WITH A CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY.>>IT DOESN’T APPEAR THAT UNION IS AFRAID OF DIKES-NEW HARTFORD, EITHER. THEY KNOW EACH OTHER SO WELL, IT’S ALMOST LIKE THEY’RE GOING OUT TO PRACTICE, EXCEPT IT’S FOR A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.>>UNION HAS A LOT OF WORK TO DO, TRAILING 22-11. VOLLEYBALL IS DEFINITELY A GAME WITH SWINGS, MOMENTUM, AND RUN. THAT’S ON THE RUN THE LAST TWO SETS AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT UNION’S GOING TO NEED RIGHT NOW.>>LOOK AT THESE HANDS. IT LOOKS FROM WHERE WE COULD SEE, BEFORE THEY WERE A LITTLE PUSHED OVER BUT NOT LIKE — THEY GO ON STRAIGHT. YOU KIND OF WANT THEM TO GO UP MORE AT AN ANGLE, HOWEVER, YOU CAN’T REALLY ARGUE WITH SUCCESS, CAN YOU?>>I’M NOT ARGUING. IT WORKED. A POINT THERE, THE BALL RIGHT ABOVE THE NYLON OF THE NET, AND THAT BRINGS UP NET POINT 24-11.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD KNEW SHE COULDN’T SEND IT OVER.>>SET POINT. LAVENZ, NOW THE BACK ROW ATTACK BY PETERSEN. BACK ROW ATTACK AND IT’S 25-11, DIKES-NEW HARTFORD ONE STEP CLOSER TO DEFENDING THEIR STATE TITLE. THEY DEFINITELY MOVED UP A CLASS TO 3A, TRYING TO GET IT DONE AND GET A LITTLE REVENGE AGAINST THE UNION KNIGHTS. WE’LL BE BACK WITH MORE RIGHT AFTER THIS. .>>>I WANT TO GO, EXPLORE, SEE WHAT’S OUT THERE.>>CHILDREN ARE PRIORITY ONE FOR IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION. PARENTS AND EDUCATORS RELY ON US FOR THE SAFE AND SAY MOST TRUSTED PROGRAMMING ONLINE AND INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD LOOKING GOOD, UP 25-18, 25-11, NEEDING JUST ONE MORE WIN. HOWEVER, UNION HAS OTHER IDEAS. TOP RANKED NUMBER ONE UNION. WE TALKED TO THEM AFTER THEIR SEMIFINAL VICTORY YESTERDAY. HERE’S A LOOK AT BRI HARVEY AND HEAD COACH BRYAN JESSE.>>I THINK IT’S A GREAT STEP IN OUR PROGRAM. WE’VE BEEN HERE ONCE BEFORE, BUT TO HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE AT IT, AND ESPECIALLY SINCE WE DIDN’T QUALIFY LAST YEAR, IT’S A GREAT FEELING.>>I JUST THINK WE’LL HAVE TO RECOOPERATE A LITTLE BIT AFTER THIS BIG MATCH HERE AND TALK ABOUT WHAT WE NEED TO DO. THERE’S NOT A LOT OF SURPRISES BETWEEN US AND DIKE. AND YOU KNOW, WE JUST NEED TO COME AND DO LIKE WE DID TODAY, JUST LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FLOOR AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS AND IF OUR BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH, GREAT.>>WE’RE BACK HERE AS WE GET SET FOR THE THIRD SET. DIKES LOOKS PRETTY DOMINANT HERE.>>THEY REALLY HAVE, AND IT’S KIND OF A SURPRISE, ESPECIALLY SINCE UNION HAS BEEN SO DOMINANT IN THIS TOURNAMENT. THEY’VE TAKEN CARE OF UNION FAIRLY EASILY AND QUICKLY. AND SO IT’S BEEN INTERESTING TO WATCH. IT WILL BE CURIOUS TO SEE IF COACH JESSE CAN GET HIS TEAM BACK ON TRACK.>>A LOT OF SENIORS ON THIS UNION TEAM. IN THE ROTATION. WHAT DO SENIORS DO WITH THEIR BACKS AGAINST WALL? LET’S GO SEE. I AM QUITE CONFIDENT THEY’RE NOT READY TO GIVE IT UP QUITE YET. THEY’RE DOWN 0-2, BUT I’VE SEEN IT TIME AND TIME AGAIN TO COME BACK AND WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD LOOKS FOCUSED AND READY TO GET THEIR REVENGE THAT UNION BEAT THEM IN THE REGULAR SEASON. LET’S GET THIS THIRD SET UNDER WAY HERE AT UNION SERVES FIRST. THERE’S THE OPENING POINT GOES TO DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. A COUPLE OF STATISTICS THROUGH THE FIRST TWO SETS, DIKES-NEW HARTFORD, 26 KILLS. UNION, 18. THAT’S VERY LOPSIDED. 5 INCH FOR DIKE, JUST 1 FOR UNION. AND PETERSEN HAS GONE ON TWO 8-POINT RUNS. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD HAS GONE ON TWO 8-POINT RUNS, ONE IN THE FIRST AND ONE IN THE SECOND SET WHEN SHE’S BACK THERE SERVING, BAYLEE PETERSEN. THERE SHE GOES AND GRABS THE VOLLEYBALL TO SERVE AGAIN. WITH A 2-0 ADVANTAGE.>>WELL, IT’S PRETTY SMART TO HAVE THE TWO PETERSEN TWINS SERVING FIRST AND SECOND.>>DIKES UP IN THE BACK ROW AND.>>PERFECT.>>OH, MY.>>OKAY. I’M GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MATCH-UPS HERE. UNION HAS CHANGED THEIR ROTATION AND PROBABLY SOME OF THEIR PLAYERS AROUND. I DON’T HAVE IT ALL CONFIGURED YET, BUT THEY HAVE CHANGED THEIR MATCH-UPS SO I LIKE SEEING COACHES TRY DIFFERENT STRATEGIES LIKE THAT, ESPECIALLY IF SOMETHING’S NOT WORKING, MAKE A CHANGE, AND SEE IF YOU CAN GET SOMETHING ELSE TO WORK. RIGHT NOW, THEY’VE FLIPPED THEIR OUTSIDE HITTERS SO THAT — LET’S SEE. NUMBER 11, WHICH IS PEYTON PARKER, SHE WAS AWAY FROM THE CENTER. SO WE’LL SEE HOW THAT WORKS FOR UNION.>>PLAYING A LITTLE BIT OF A CHEF’S GAME HERE INSIDE THIS COURT OF VOLLEYBALL.>>AND THAT SOMETIMES CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. SO IF YOU HAVE A BLOCKER WITH A HITTER’S NUMBER, JUST BY CHANGING IT TO A DIFFERENT HITTER, THAT BLOCKER MAY NOT TIME IT QUITE RIGHT WITH THAT HITTER AND YOU MAY NOT HAVE A LOT OF SUCCESS.>>UNION GETS ANOTHER POINT HERE. 3-2, UNION, AGAIN, SO GOOD THIS YEAR WITH ONLY FOUR LOSSES, THOSE FOUR LOSSES COMING IN STATE TOURNAMENT QUALIFIERS AS A KILL FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD THERE. LET’S LOOK AT THE REPLAY. UNION’S HAD A TOUGH RUN HERE.>>THOSE WERE ALL STATE QUALIFIER, TOO. SO KNOWING THEY CAN COMPETE WITH ANYONE AND THEN DIKES-NEW HARTFORD ON THE OTHER SIDE WINS OVER CEDAR FALLS TWICE AND SOME OTHER GREAT TEAMS, BOTH COACHES CRYING TO DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO GET THESE STUDENT ATHLETES PREPARED FOR THE BIGGEST STATE GOING UP AGAINST A TOUGH, BIGGER SCHOOL.>>NICE SWING.>>WELL, YOU HAVE TO THINK WHEN A TEAM THAT PLAYS DEFENSE AS WELL AS DIKES-NEW HARTFORD DOES, YOU HAVE TO THINK THEY’RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO STAND IN THERE WITH A LOT OF THE BEST TEAMS IN THE STATE.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WITH NUMBER TWO ON THE TEAM IN KILLS, AVERAGING 4.3 A SET.>>SO AGAIN, SHE’S 5-7. THE KEY TO THE SECOND PASS, I MEAN, YES, MIDDLES ARE USUALLY TALLER THAN THAT, BUT THE KEY IS HOW QUICK CAN YOU GET IT THERE, HOW QUICK CAN YOU BEAT THE BLOCK. THE BACK SERVICE LINE, UNION IS STARTING TO GET A LITTLE GROOVE GOING ON OFFENSIVELY.>>IT DOES FEEL LIKE THE MOMENTUM’S CHANGING ADJUST LITTLE BIT.>>BAYLEE BROWN SERVING. HERE COMES UNION. THEY’VE GOT OPTIONS. A POINT FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD BEFORE CONTACT IS CALLED. MIGHT HAVE HIT THE HANDS ON THE BLOCK, AS WELL.>>I THINK THE REF THOUGHT IT ONLY HIT THE TOP OF THE NET AND NO HANDS AND THAT’S WHY SHE MADE THAT CALL. SAME RESULT. SO DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WENT ON A RUN FOR THE FIRST AND SECOND SET. ON A LITTLE RUN RIGHT NOW. NUMBER ONE RANKED TEAM HERE IN THE CLASS 3A. PEYTON PARKER, THE SENIOR. AND DIALLED THAT ONE IN.>>I THINK THAT WAS THE SAME SPOT THAT BAYLEE PETERSEN HIT LAST TIME, THE BALL’S MAGNET.>>I DIDN’T TELL HARD TO GET MUCH CLOSER.>>RIGHT.>>THAN THAT.>>IT IS HARD TO TELL WHAT THOSE BALLS ARE GOING TO DO. IT’S EASY TO LET THEM GO. YOU HOPE THEY’RE GOING TO BE OUT RIGHT AT THE LINE.>>AND THE DROP’S ON THE LINE, BACK DOWN. BACK TO BACK SERVICES. A 3-0 RUN FOR UNION, THREE IN A SITUATION. HUSTLE. OFF TO HARTFORD.>>AND RIGHT NOW, THAT’S KIND OF MAKING THE DIFFERENCE IS THE TOUCHES THAT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD ARE GETTING, THEY’RE ABLE TO GET A SECOND CONTACT AND SEND IT OVER THE NET INCOMPETENT TOUCHES THAT UNION ARE GETTING, THEY AREN’T ABLE TO GET THAT SECOND CONTACT TO SEND IT OVER THE NET ON THE THIRD. THAT’S ONE OF THE DIFFERENCES.>>I KNOW WE’VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR QUITE A WHILE AND NOW FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAIN –.>>SURE, THE MAIN ONE IS THE RALLY SCORING. SO IT USED TO BE WHERE YOU HAD TO SERVE TO GET A POINT AND YOU ONLY PLAYED TO 15. NOW YOU HAVE TO — WHOEVER WINS THE RALLY, GETS THE POINT AND YOU PLAY TO 25. THEN THE NET, WE TALKED ABOUT THE NET SERVE. THAT IS CONSIDERED IN IF IT GOES OVER THE NET. AND THEN THE OTHER MAIN ONE IS THE LIB ROW POSITION, A DEFENSIVE POSITION, THOSE PLAYERS WEAR DIFFERENT COLOR JERSEYS SO THE REFS KNOW THEY HAVE DIFFERENT RULES. THEY DON’T COUNT AS A SUBSTITUTION. THEY CAN SET THE BALL AS LONG AS THEY’RE BEHIND THE 3 METER LINE. THEY CANNOT ATTACK A BALL AS LONG AS THEY’RE ANYWHERE. THEY CAN’T ATTACH A BALL AS LONG AS THEY’RE FWHFB HEIGHT OF THE NET.>>SO A LOT OF RULE CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE PAST DECADE. IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE, EVERY YEAR THEY ANALYZE AND KEEP EVERYTHING CREDITED. INTERNATIONAL RULES.>>EVEN INTERNATIONALLY, THEY’RE THINKING ABOUT CHANGING SOME OF THE RULES. AND I THINK — I WASN’T NECESSARILY FOR THE RALLY POINTS, ALTHOUGH I LIKE IT NOW. BUT I THINK WE SAW THE CHANGES THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT MAKING WILL REALLY CHANGE THE GAME, AND I JUST KEEP THINKING BACK TO BASKETBALL, JUST BECAUSE THE ATHLETES GOT BETTER, THEY DIDN’T CHANGE THE HEIGHT OF THE HOOP OR THE SIZE OF THE COURT. SOME OF THE RULES THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT IS LIKE FOR THE JUMP SERVE, THAT YOU HAVE TO LAND BEHIND THE END LINE. FOR THE BACK ROW, YOU HAVE TO LAND BEHIND THE 3-METER LINE.>>WE’LL KEEP AN EYE ON THAT. POOR CONTACT CALLED IN A VERY LONG RALLY AND YOU CAN TELL THE UNION’S DIGGING A LITTLE DEEPER HERE. 10 APIECE. LIKING JUST THE EVOLUTION, THOUGH, AND THE QUALITY WE’RE SEEING HERE. THE LEVEL OF THESE STUDENT ATHLETES COMPARED TO A FEW YEARS AGO.>>YEAH, THE GAME IS A LOT FASTER. THAT’S HOW YOU KEEP PEOPLE. THE FASTER AND THE BETTER YOU ARE, IT STARTED TO BE FAST AT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL AND THEN THAT KIND OF TRICKLED DOWN AND NOW IT’S FAST AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL. BUT THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL AS WE CAN SEE FROM THE OLYMPIC SYSTEM RIGHT NOW IS EVEN FASTER THAN THAT. SO JUST WHATEVER YOU CAN DO TO MAKE IT FASTER.>>GREAT ANALYSIS FROM OUR BROADCAST PARTNER, OVERALL AMERICAN AT UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, FORMER DIVISION ONE COACH PLUS THE PANTHERS TO SWEET 16 AND SUCCESSFUL HERE. HOPING TO EDUCATE YOU, THE VIEWERS, ABOUT THIS GREAT SPORT THAT WE LOVE, THE SPORT OF VOLLEYBALL. THE CHAMPIONSHIP HERE ON IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION WHERE IT’S A 3A MATCH BETWEEN SCHOOLS LOCATED ABOUT A HALF HOUR AWAY FROM EACH OTHER IN NORTHEAST IOWA, LA PORTE CITY UNION IN DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. DIKES WAS DOMINANT IN THE FIRST TWO SETS WINNING 25-18, 25-11. WE’RE AT THE MIDWAY POINT HERE IN THE THIRD AND I DIDN’T TELL ABOUT AS EVEN AS WE CAN GET IT.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS LUCKY THEY WON THAT POINT, BECAUSE, WELL, I MEAN, I SHOULDN’T SAY LUCKY. THEY SHOULD HAVE WON THAT POINT BECAUSE UNION WAS IN THE NET HUGE DURING THAT FLIGHT, BUT THEY ENDED UP WINNING THE POINT ANYWAY. SO LIKE WE SAY, THE BALL KNOWS.>>12-12. UNION ON THE ATTACK. DIKES WEARING THE WHITE UNIFORMS, UNION WEARING THE DARK TOPS. GOING INSIDE. LOCKED OUT OF BOUNDS, LAST TOUCHED BY UNION. LAVENZ WITH THE KILL. SO A CHANCE TO BUILD ON THIS LEAD. ATTACKED FROM THE BACK ROW, A TOUGH HIT, VALLEY OVERPASS. ANOTHER BACK ROW ATTACK. WIDE OPEN. JUST A LITTLE BIT OUT OF DISTANCE DEFENSIVELY AND THAT LEFT A WIDE OPEN HOLE IN THE BACK ROW. LOOK AT THE REPLAY. TOSSED IT UP. NO ONE SAW IT IN THE BACK ROW. A 4-0 RUN FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. LET’S GO INSIDE THEIR HUDDLE.>>BACK IN. GOOD JOB. WAY TO BE UP AND BACK UP. BLOCKERS, MAKE SURE WE’RE GOING UP STRONG AND GETTING OUR SHOULDER FORWARD. LOOKING UP, SHOULDERS ARE GETTING USED MORE. HITTERS, KEEP IT HIGH. LET’S GO.>>27TH STATE TOURNAMENT PETERSEN FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD FOR DIANE HARMS, SHE’S ALREADY WON FOUR STATE TITLES, LOOKING TO MAKE IT FIVE.>>IT REALLY ISN’T. BUT I THINK, YOU KNOW, IN DIKES-NEW HARTFORD, THEY HAVE SOMETHING IN THEIR WATTR AND THEY JUST KNOW HOW TO PLAY VOLLEYBALL.>>AND FASTBALL AND MANY OTHER SPORTS, AS WELL.>>A FALL SPORTS SEASON AFTER TODAY ARE DONE FOR THE GIRLS AND I KNOW FOOTBALL WRAPS UP SOON AND THEN SHIFT GEARS AND WE’RE IN THE WINTER.>>PLAY BASKETBALL AND WRESTLE AND ALL THAT FUN STUFF.>>AND A LOT OF THESE PLAYER ON BOTH TEAMS ARE IN MULTIPLE SPORTS, AND I THINK THAT’S GREAT. IT GIVES THEM. FOR ONE, THEY DON’T GET BURNT OUT ON ONE SPORT, BUT IT ALSO GIVES THEM THINGS FROM ONE SPORT CAN CARRY OVER AND TRANSFER TO ANOTHER SPORT.>>IMPROVING THE MULTISPORTS, STUDENT ATHLETES.>>ABSOLUTELY. AND ANY VIEWERS AS FAR AS EACH TEAM WITH THOSE.>>AND A LOT OF COACHES ARE REALLY EMPHASIZING, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO SPECIALIZE IN ONE SPORT, WHICH I THINK IS JUST TOO BAD.>>UNION, NEEDING TO WIN THE THIRD SET. THEY’RE RANKED NUMBER ONE OVERALL IN CLASS 3A. DIKES HAS BEEN DOMINANT IN THE FIRST TWO SETS AND GETTING THE KILL NOW IS BUSH.>>AND THAT TIME, THE DEFENSE FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD KIND OF SPLIT THE BACK COURT AND SO THE MIDDLE BACK PART OF THE COURT WAS OPEN.>>SHE’S JUST A FRESHMAN, JASMYN BUSH, THE OUTSIDE HITR.>>AND DIKE USED THE OFFENSE THAT WHEN A BALL HITS RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COURT, WE COACHES CALL THAT CAMPFIRE DEFENSE. WE DON’T HIKE THE CAMPFIRE DEFENSE BECAUSE THAT MEANS EVERYBODY JUST SURROUNDS AND WATCHES IT.>>THE BALL’S RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAMPFIRE.>>YEP.>>ATTACKED THERE, SMART DECISION TO TRY AND GO SIDELINE THE SIDELINE BUT JUST A BIT SHORT AND NOW A TWO-POINT LEAD TO DIKES-NEW HARTFORD AND WE’RE PLAYING TO 25. PETERSEN, TOUGH SERVE AND IT RESULTS IN A POINT.>>THOSE SERVES ARE COMING LIKE BULLETS. THEY’RE COMING SO QUICK, NOW, ON A THIN SERVE, THOSE ARE EASIER TO PASS. THEY’RE JUST HARDER TO GET TO. IF YOU CAN GET TO IT, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS KEEP YOUR ARMS BEHIND THE SPIN AND IT JUST PAZES. SO THE FLOAT SERVICE PASSES BECAUSE IT MOVES INTO THE AIR LIKE A KNUCKLE BALL. SOMETIMES YOU CAN BE IN PERFECT POSITION AND THE BALL WILL JUST MOVE IT IN THE LAST POSITION.>>THE SENIOR CENTER HAD A COUPLE UP THERE BUT UNABLE TO GET ONE THERE AND IT’S ANOTHER KILL FOR LAVENZ. LAVENZ ALSO LEADING THE WAY, BAYLEE PETERSEN OFFENSIVELY, 24 KILLS BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM. IF YOU THROW IN HALEIGH DURNIN’S 7 KILLS, THE FIRST ATTACK FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD HERE. MIDDLE ATTACK. LOOK OUT. DID I MENTION AMBER RICKERT? SHE’S A STOP POINT. AND THAT’S HER FOURTH KILL.>>AND THEY JUST HAVE THAT BALL MOVING SO QUICKLY ON THE OFFENSE. THAT’S HOW THEY’RE GETTING IT DONE. THEY’RE NOT THE BIGGEST TEAM, BUT THEY JUMP DECENTLY, AND THEY’RE QUICK.>>OUT OF THE NET THERE. AND NO WAY THEY’RE GOING TO GET THIS. THE BALL FALLS DEEP AND OUT OF BOUND FOR ANOTHER KILL FOR RICKERT AND NOW A 4-POINT LEAD FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. THEY’RE 6 POINTS AWAY FROM SWEEPING UNION AND WINNING THE 3A TITLE. UNION IS LOOKING FOR NEW HOPE AND NEW OPPORTUNITY. MEGAN IS A SENIOR OUTSIDE HITTER BACK IN THE BACK ROW AND NOW CHECKING IN IS HAILEE BROWN. LINE DRIVE SERVE, GOOD PASS, BACK SET. THE WORST TIME TO GET THERE, BUT SHE DID AND IT RESULTS IN A KILL. NOW 20-16.>>YOU KEEP HER IN YOUR POSITION AND THEN IT ROLLS AROUND AND JUST DROPS OVER, REALLY DIFFICULT.>>SECOND AND FINAL TIMEOUT, CALLED BY BRYAN JESSE AND THE UNION KNIGHTS, 20-16 AS WE’VE ALREADY SEEN A SWEEP IN 5A AND 4A. THREE MATCHES SO FAR AND . AND NOW, THE DIVISION 1 HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH PETERSEN NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR NATIONALLY SEVERAL YEARS AGO. THEY SHOULD HAVE FUN AND VERY PROUD OF SYDNEY AND BAYLEE, THEIR TWIN DAUGHTERS. YOU HAD A CHANCE TO COACH WITH HER FOR MANY YEARS.>>YEAH, AND I KNOW ONE THING FOR SURE, SHE’S NERVOUS.>>IS SHE NERVOUS RIGHT NOW?>>SHE WOULD BE. SHE DOESN’T EVER TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED.>>MAYBE THAT’S WHY SHE WAS SO GREAT.>>IT ABSOLUTELY S. SHE’S VERY PREPARED.>>SHE BUILT THE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM ON THE BACK OF IOWA GIRLS. HER PROGRAM BUILT WITH FLARES WITH THE STATE OF IOWA VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT. SHE’S HAD A LOT OF SUCCESS TRYING TO GET BACK — MEANWHILE, UNION IN A MUST-WIN SITUATION.>>I’D KEEP THAT WITH HER RIGHT NOW.>>AND SHE HITS THE BALL FROM A HIGH SPOT. SO I’D JUST KEEP GIVING IT TO HER.>>THAT’S 5.4 KILLS PER SET, BUT IT’S A SIDE OUT UNDER SERVICE THERE, TRYING TO BE AGGRESSIVE, TRYING TO GET THE 8, BUT IT GOES JUST A TAD OUT OF BOUNDS.>>THAT’S KIND OF WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT EARLIER. ABOUT BEING AGGRESSIVE AND DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE IN THE MATCH. THIS IS DO OR DIE FOR UNION. EVERY MISSED POINT THEY HAVE PUTS DIKES-NEW HARTFORD ONE POINT CLOSER TO THAT CHAMPIONSHIP. SO YOU KIND OF HAVE TO TAKE A LITTLE OFF AND MAKE SURE YOU GET THE BALL IN. TAKING THE DEFENSE, BUT GET IT IN.>>A POINT FOR UNION. JACKIE BARZ TO SERVE, CHECKING INTO THE LINE-UP HERE, ALLIE CARTY.>>NICE SPOT, RIGHT OVER THE LINE ON THAT.>>BLOCKED, BACK ROW ATTACK. AND HERE COMES UNION.>>A LITTLE BIT OF A BLOCK ON THAT BAYLEE PETERSEN’S LAUGHING AT HERSELF ON THAT ONE.>>GOOD UP, GREAT GAME.>>WHAT A GREAT TOUCH.>>NEITHER TEAM LETTING THE BALL HIT THE COURT ON THIS RALLY. THERE’S THE POINT UNION NEEDED. 21-20.>>THAT TIME, HUDSON DID A GREAT JOB OF KEEPING IT BALL EYE LEVEL. JUMPS A LITTLE TOO EARLY SO THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY EARLY WHEN SHE HIT.>>GOING INSIDE THE UNION HUDDLE, THEY NOW DID A COMEBACK AND TRAIL JUST BY 1.>>LET’S KEEP IT GOING, KEEP THE PRESSURE ON. BACK ROW, WHILE YOU’RE WAITING, RUN THROUGH THAT WALL. THEY RUN THROUGH IT. LET’S GO.>>WORD OF WISDOM FROM BRYAN JESSE.>>I KIND OF WONDER IF SOME OF THE UNION PLAYERS ARE OVERHEATING. A COUPLE OF THEM ARE PUTTING ICE PACKS ON THEIR NECK. I WONDER IF THEY’RE FEELING OVERLY WARM.>>IT’S A TENSE SITUATION. EVERYTHING ON THE LINE FOR LA PORTE CITY UNION RIGHT HERE. IT’S A MUCH WIN SITUATION AFTER DROPPING THE FIRST SET 25-18, THE SECOND SET 25-11. THEY’RE ON A RUN WITH A LONG WAY TO THE FINISH LINE. THAT’S POINT, TIED AT 21.>>AND THE UNION FANS ARE FEELING A LITTLE BIT OF A BREATH OF GREEN HERE.>>GREAT SERVING FROM JACKIE BARZ THE SENIOR. OFF THE BLOCK. AND THE RUN CONTINUES. 4-0 RUN.>>THAT WAS A GREAT TOUCH BY SYDNEY PETERSEN, BUT AGAIN I’M GOING TO SAY THAT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS JUMPING A TOUCH EARLY SO THEY’RE HITTING HIGH AND IT’S TOUCHING OFF THE FINGERTIPS.>>OKAY. WE’VE GOT TO KEEP RUNNING. SAVE THIS PASS RIGHT HERE, WE’VE GOT IT. STOP IT. GOOD PASS, LET’S GO.>>DIANE HARMS SAID OUR SCHEDULE HAS PREPARED US FOR THIS MOMENT. OUR TEAM RALLIES IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY. WE’VE FACED VERY GOOD TEAMS, CLOSE MATCHES, BOTH CONFERENCE AND SATURDAY TOURNAMENTS FOR TIGHT MATCHES LIKE THIS, PREPARING BY WORKING ON THINGS THEY CAN CONTROL LIKE SERVE-RECEIVE. STAYING AGGRESSIVE. THEY FIGHT ALL THE WAY BACK. IT’S A GREAT VOLLEYBALL FOR HER EYES RIGHT NOW. PLAY. UNION WITH THE BALL, 23-21.>>I THINK THAT’S TIMING. UNION NORMALLY PLAY AS PRETTY GOOD DEFENSE AND THAT TIME THEY SHIFTED INTO A SHIFT DEFENSE. PERIMETER DEFENSE WOULD BE GREAT, BUT I THINK THEY SHIFTED TO ROTATION AND GOT THAT BALL.>>THERE’S ANOTHER ROTATIONAL SHIFT.>>MAYBE I’M WRONG AND THEY’RE PLAYING ROTATION.>>TRYING TO GET THE SET POINT, BUT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS FIGHTING FOR IT, STOPPING A 5-0 RUN.>>PETERSEN DID A GREAT JOB THAT TIME OF FINDING THE RHYTHM. THAT BALL WOULD HAVE BEEN OUT OF BOUNDS HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE BLOCKER, BUT SHE WAS AIMING FOR BOTH HANDS.>>BAYLEE PETERSEN, 15 KILLS TO LEAD EVERYONE IN THIS MATCH. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WANTS TO WIN IT. PETERSEN WATCHING THE NET, TRIED TO CATCH THE SLEEPING AND UNABLE TO GET TO THAT IN THE BACK CORNER. NOW WE’RE TIED AT WAY TO-ALL AND THIS IS THE SECOND KILL OF THE MATCH FOR MADISON HEDGES, THE CENTER. SHE’S A GREAT CENTER, BUT SHE DOESN’T GET HER OWN NUMBER VERY OFTEN. NO ONE EXPECTING THAT PLAY. QUICK SET, DIKES-NEW HARTFORD GOING INSIDE TO PETERSEN. QUICK SET AGAIN. AND DOWN FOR THE KILL ON THE OUTSIDE. THAT BRINGS US SET POINT FOR THE UNION. 15 KILLS FOR MEGAN HUDSON, THE STATE TOP HITTER AVERAGING NEARLY SIX KILLS PER SET AND A CHANCE FOR THE SENIOR MAGGIE DRISCOL. DOWN FOR THE KILL AND WE’RE GOING TO THE FOURTH SET. THEY HAD TO DIG DEEP, BUT UNION BEHIND 16 KILLS OF MEGAN HUDSON, UNION WINNING 25-23, BACK WITH MORE FROM CEDAR RAPIDS RIGHT AFTER THIS.>>>JOIN IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION FOR FESTIVAL, A NEW TRADITION, NOVEMBER 19TH AND 20TH AND 26TH THROUGH THE 28TH.>>I’VE LIVEED IT FROM A YOUNG ANGRY AND CAN’T IMAGINE LIFE WITHOUT IT YET WHAT REALLY ABELS US TO COMMUNICATE, THE PERFORMING ARTS, CLASSIC ARTS, ALL OF IT. IT’S WHAT MAKES US HUMAN.>>THIS IS AN EXCITING TIME FOR THE ARTS. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE REACHED THAT COULDN’T HAVE BEEN BEFORE.>>WITHOUT PBS, I DON’T KNOW IF I WOULD BE A SINGER.>>PUBLIC BROADCASTING IS SOMETHING I GREW UP WITH. MY PARENTS ALWAYS HAD IT ON. I DON’T THINK THERE’S A BETTER BANG FOR YOUR BUCK THAN PUTTING IT INTO THE ARTS.>>PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL PBS STATION.>>FROM I HAD A DREAM TO I CAN’T BREATHE, FROM STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON TO WHITE TOWN. BLACK HISTORY IS AMERICAN HISTORY. BLACK AMERICA GIVES MLK.>>TUESDAY AT 7:00 SATURDAY MORNING ADD 11:30.>>>GETTING A QUICK NAP IN HERE BEFORE THIS FOURTH SET GETS UNDER WAY. IT’S LOUD HERE WITH THE CALL. WE MENTIONED THAT IT WAS A MUST-WIN. WE MENTIONED THE UNION HAS 16 YEARS IN THE STARTING ROTATION. THEY WENT ON A RUN DOWN THE STRETCH. IT WAS 21-18, AND THEY MADE THE RUN TO GET US HERE TO THIS FOURTH SET.>>WELL, THEIR OFFENSE KIND OF PICKED UP. THEY WERE ABLE TO DIG A VIEW OF THE BALL THAT THEY HADN’T BEEN DIGGING EARLIER AND WERE ABLE TO PUT IT UP ALL THE WAY.>>LET’S GET THE FOURTH SET UNDER WAY. IT’S THE FIRST TIME HERE TODAY THAT WE’VE GONE TO A FOURTH SET. THE SURPRISE TO ME IS NUMBER ONE CEDAR FALLS WAS SWEPT BY NUMBER TWO ANKANY CENTENNIAL AND NOW NUMBER ONE UNION IS FIGHTING TO GET THIS TO THE FIFTH SET OVER A VERY STRONG DIKES-NEW HARTFORD.>>WELL, THEY SEEM TO HAVE FOUND THEIR GAME.>>THE MOMENTUM HAS SHIFTED.>>WELL, THAT BALL WAS A LITTLE BIT FLAT. THE SET WAS A TOUCH LOW AND WHEN IT’S LOW, IT’S HARD TO HIT IT ON TOP AND STILL MAKE IT GO OVER THE NET. YOU KIND OF HAVE TO STAY ON TOP OF IT.>>THE WOLVERINES GETTING THEIR FIRST POINT BEHIND PETERSEN AS BAYLEE AND NOW SHE HAS A CHANCE TO SERVE. DIKES, OVER TO THE OUTSIDE. FEEDING GREAT INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES ON BOTH SIDES, AND THIS IS WHAT YOU’D EXPECT FROM THE CLASS 3A FINAL. AND DIKES ON A 2-0 RUN HERE.>>WE TALKED ABOUT PETERSEN BEING ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE STATE. AND WATCH OUT HOW SHE POSITIONS HERSELF. THAT PLAY WAS SAVED BY HEAR COUPLE TIMES.>>NOT ONLY DOES PETERSEN HAVE 15 KILLS, SHE HAS 4 SERVES, AS WELL.>>WELL, AND I’M GOING TO SAY IT’S BECAUSE HER BALL DOES CURVE A LITTLE. IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO GO STRAIGHT AND THEN AT THE VERY END, IT TAILS OFF TO A LITTLE TO HER LEFT WHICH MAKES IT HARDER TO PAS.>>THE BIG SIDE OUT THERE FOR UNION. AND A PLAYER THAT STARTS TO EMERGE A LITTLE BIT HERE IS JASMYN BUSH, A 5-8 FRESHMAN OUTSIDE HITTER AND 129 KILLS IN THE REGULAR SEASON. WITH THREE KILLS HERE, THEY’RE DOING A LITTLE MORE THAN THEY WERE IN THE FIRST COUPLE SETS. DOWN THE LINE.>>IT LOOKS LIKE THE DIKES-NEW HARTFORD GAME PLAN IS TO HIT THAT LINE SET. THEY WERE FAIRLY SUCCESSFUL WITH IT EARLY ON, BUT THEN UNION MADE THAT ADJUSTMENT KIND OF MORE TO A ROTATIONAL PEAK AND GOT SOME SAVED FROM IT. WE’LL SEE HOW THIS PLAYS.>>I LIKE THE IDEA, HIT A LITTLE, THE BACK ROW WAS OPEN, A LITTLE TOO HARD ON THE ATTACK. 4-4 HERE IN THE FOURTH. AMBER RICKERT, SIX KILLS FOR HER.>>I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU A QUIZ. WE TALKED ABOUT UNION CHANGING THEIR LINE-UP IN THE THIRD SET. SO IN THE FOURTH SET, DO YOU THINK THEY WENT WITH THE LINE-UP THEY WENT WITH IN SETS ONE AND TWO OR THE LINE-UP THEY WENT WITH IN THE SET THEY WON?>>THE ONE THAT GOT THEM THE WIN.>>EXACTLY. SO WHAT THEY’VE DONE IS THEIR OUTSIDE HITTERS, THEY’RE PLAYING AWAY FROM THE SETTERS AND THEY’VE SWITCHED THEM.>>5-5 AND DIKES-NEW HARTFORD, THEY’RE THE ONES CELEBRATING IN WHITE UNIFORMS, TAKING ON LA PORTE CITY UNION, VERY SIMILAR SIZED SCHOOLS. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD BUMPED UP FROM 2A TO 3A, 47-5 DIKES-NEW HARTFORD’S RECORD AND UNION, 40 WINS, 4 LOSSES. AND THIS IS DIKES-NEW HARTFORD’S 27TH STATE APPEARANCE.>>JACKIE BARZ BARELY TOUCHED IT OVER THE NET. THERE WAS NO ROOM AND SO TIGHT TO THE NET. IT WAS A REALLY NICE TOUCH.>>SHE’S HAD HERSELF A GREAT CHAMPIONSHIP. SHE WAS THE ONE BACK THERE SERVING WHEN IT WENT ON THAT BIG RUN. AND THEN GO TO MY FAVORITE CAMERA, THE NET CAM.>>WE CAN SEE THAT ANTENNA WIGGLE A LITTLE BIT, BUT THAT’S JUST BECAUSE THE BALL HIT THE NET. IF THE BALL HITS THE ANTENNA, IT’S UP TO THE LINE JUDGES TO MAKE SURE THE REST GOES BACK.>>INTO THE NET WE GO.>>SO THAT BALL WAS SET QUITE A BIT OFF THE NET AND IT’S HARD TO MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT IF YOU’VE ALREADY STARTED YOUR APPROACH. SO THAT’S ONE OF THE TIMES WHERE YOU JUST HAVE TO BE SMART WITH IT AND CAN’T REALLY SWING A VERY AGGRESSIVE SWING ON IT.>>AND AT THE VERY LEAST, JUST BUMP IT OVER THE NET.>>YEAH, THE VERY LEAST.>>BIG SWING THERE. AGAIN, SHE DOES NOT DO THAT VERY OFTEN. MADISON HEDGES JUST 18 KILLS IN THE REGULAR SEASON. SHE HAS A COUPLE HERE IN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH. UNION, NEAR SIDE ATTACK, GOES LONG. HARD TO GO SIDELINE TO SIDELINE, CUTTING IT ACROSS THE BASE OF THE NET LIKE THAT.>>IT’S A TOUGH ANGLE, BUT IT CAN BE MADE. A LOT OF TIMES, DEFENSIVELY, IT’S VERY HARD TO PLAY, BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON’T PUT TOO MUCH TWIST ON IT.>>REMEMBER MADISON LAVENZ, THE SENIOR — EXCUSE ME, AMBER RICHTER, LAVENZ JOINING HER IN THAT BACK ROW ROTATION, SECOND EIGHT SO FAR FOR AMBER RICKERT. RIGHT DOWN THAT LINE AND THE FIFTH KILL INTO THE FRONT ROW FOR UNION.>>I THINK IT’S DEFINITELY SAFE TO SAY THAT UNION IS ON THEIR GAME.>>OKAY, YEAH. AGAIN, THEY NEEDED JUST TO FIND A WAY TO CHANGE THE MOMENTUM, AND THEY DID THAT IN THAT THIRD SET. THEY KNOW THEY CAN BEAT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD BECAUSE THEY DID IT EARLIER THIS YEAR. NOW A LITTLE DIFFERENT SCENARIO. THAT WAS IN THEIR HOME GYM. THIS IS ON THE BIGGEST, BRIGHTEST STAGES WITH ALL THE MARBLES STACKED ON THE TABLE.>>AND I DON’T KNOW IF YOU CAN CALL IT A NEUTRAL FIGHT NECESSARILY, BECAUSE I THINK THE WHOLE TOWN OF LA PORTE AND THE WHOLE TOWN OF DIKES-NEW HARTFORD ARE ALL HERE. SO I’M NOT SURE YOU CAN CALL IT NEUTRAL.>>THAT’S WHAT WE EXPECTED. WHEN WE GET TO THE 3A, 2A, 1A, JUST SHUT DOWN THE TOWN AND BRING EVERYONE TO CEDAR RAPIDS.>>THE STUDENT SECTION IS TRYING TO DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO SUPPORT THEIR FELLOW CLASSMATES. MEANWHILE, 9 KILLS COMING FOR LA PORTE CITY UNION, BRI HARVEY CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE YEAR THAT SHE HAS HAD, LEADING THE TEAM IN BLOCKS AND THEN A BIG OFFENSIVE LEFT END. BLOCK AND A POINT. CARLEE DOVE IS ON THE FRONT END AND SHE’S JUST IMPOSSIBLE.>>AND SHE’S A PERFECT PLAYER TO PUT ON THAT RIGHT SIDE TO HAVE A NICE BIG BLOCK AGAINST USUALLY THE OTHER TEAM’S STRONGEST HITTERS.>>SOMEHOW, ABLE TO KICK THAT OVER. AND NOT THE BEST ATTACK, THE BACK ROW FROM PETERSEN. ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THIS FOURTH SET, UNION WANTS THIS TO GO FIVE. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD’S GOING TO DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO TRY TO SHIFT THE SCORE TO WIN THIS 3A TITLE IN FOUR. SOME OF THAT MAY BE A LITTLE PRESSURE WITH UNION FIGHTING BACK, BUT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS NOW TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHEY THEY DID IN THE FIRST TWO SETS AND EMULATE THEM.>>GREAT JOB BY THE IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION GROUP HERE WITH ALL THE SIGHTS AND SOUND AND CAMERA ANGLES, CAPTURING THE EMOTION OF THIS CLASS 3A FINALS. THEY’RE WORKING HARD HERE ON THIS VETERANS DAY AND WE’D LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU IF YOU’RE WATCHING AND HAVE SERVED OR ARE CURRENTLY SERVING OUR GREAT NATION. IT’S A VERY SPECIAL DAY HERE AND IT’S FUN THAT WE GET TO HAND OUT SOME CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES TO THESE HARD-WORKING STUDENT ATHLETES. 5A, 4A, NOW AT 3A. ANOTHER ERROR, ANOTHER POINT FOR LA PORTE CITY UNION, NOW LEADING BY 2.>>AND AGAIN THAT’S A LITTLE BIT OF MISCOMMUNICATION, NOT KNOWING WHO’S GOING TO TAKE THE BALL AND BOTH WANTING TO DO SO MUCH TO TRY AND GET THIS MATCH BACK ON THE RIGHT FOOT FOR THE WOLVERINES.>>HITS THE OUTSIDE. UNION WORK IN THE MIDDLE, AND STILL. THANK GOODNESS FOR LA PORTE CITY UNION. SIX KILLS FOR — LET’S GO INSIDE THE UNION HUDDLE AS THEY LEAD WITH 12.>>ALL RIGHT. PLAYING AGGRESSIVE. THAT’S THE DIFFERENCE. WE’RE AGGRESSIVE. OKAY. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THEM THE WHOLE TIME. STAY WITH IT, GUYS. STAY WITH IT.>>TO HIM, IT SOUNDS LIKE HE THINKS THE DIFFERENCE IS THEY’RE BEING AGGRESSIVE. THEY WEREN’T AGGRESSIVE IN THE FIRST TWO SETS. I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE. I THINK THEY’RE MORE AGGRESSIVE AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BE MORE AGGRESSIVE BECAUSE THEY’RE MAKING FEWER ERRORS. SO IT’S KIND OF A SNOWBALL EFFECT. ONE COMES AFTER THE OTHER. WHICH CAME FIRST? THE CHICKEN OR EGG?>>I’LL TELL YOU ONE THING, UNION IS PLAYING THEIR BEST VOLLEYBALL HEADING INTO THE STATE TOURNAMENT. THEY WON 18 MATCHES IN A ROW. AND I THINK THEY WERE JUST NOT MAKING A LITTLE BY SURPRISE AND THE DOMANCE IN THE FIRST TWO SETS. 25-18, 25-11. THEY’VE TURNED THAT BOAT AROUND AND THEY’RE HEADING THE RIGHT DIRECTION NOW AFTER WINNING THE THIRD SET 25-23, LEADING NOW 16-12.>>SHE IS VERY, VERY DETERMINED.>>AND A FAST SET RESULTS IN A DIKES-NEW HARTFORD POINT. NOT THE CLEANEST PLAY, BUT THEY MADE IT WORK. SOMETIMES YOU’VE GOT TO DO THAT.>>NOT THE CLEANEST PLAY –.>>IT WAS A GOOD SET.>>THEY JUST WANT TO FIND A WAY FOR IT TO HIT THE FLOOR AND EVERYTHING’S GOOD. A LITTLE STORY ABOUT SYDNEY APPEARANCE FROM A FEW YEARS AGO. WHEN SHE WAS IN 8TH GRADE AND GOING TO BE A FRESHMAN, SHE BASICALLY PULL BAYLEE ASIDE AND SAID, COME ON, BAYLEE, WE’RE GOING TO WORK LIKE CRAZY BECAUSE WE’RE GOING TO START ON THE VARSITY TEAM. AND THEY DID. BAYLEE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED A STARTER, BUT SHE CAME IN THE FRONT ROW EVERY ROTATION AND PLAYED A MAJOR PART ON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM THAT YEAR. SHE’S QUITE DETERMINED. SHE WORKED HARD FOR WHAT SHE HAS, AND IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF SHE CAN DIG HER TEAM OUT OF THIS HOLE. HA-HA, GET IT.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WITH A POINT. HER MOTHER AND FATHER BOTH STAND OUT ATHLETES. LEADING BY 3, THEY’RE LOOKING FOR A QUITE SIDE — AND THEY GOT IT RIGHT THERE. NUMBER TWO ON THE TEAM IN KILLS. BUT A PRETTY STRONG SERVER, AS WELL. DIKES WITH A QUICK POINT.>>NICE SWING BY BAYLEE PETERSEN, HIT THE MIDDLE OF THE COURT, TWO DEFENDERS ON UNION. SPLITTING THE COURT, LEAVES THE MIDDLE OPEN.>>16 KILLS FOR BAYLEE PETERSEN. NOW THEY’RE HITTING 5-4 AND NEEDING JUST 6 MORE POINTS TO WIN THE 4TH SET AND GET THIS TO THE 5TH. BARZ HELPS UNION GO ON A BIG RUN. THEY WERE DOWN 21-18 LATE IN THE THIRD SET WHEN BARZ WENT BACK TO SERVE. RIGHT DOWN THE LINE, TRYING TO MAKE AN UPSET. 18 BIG KILLS AND A 5-POINT LEAD.>>SHE’S BIGGER AND REACHES HIGHER THAN THE BLOCK.>>THERE IS THE DIKES-NEW HARTFORD HUDDLE AS THEY TRAIL BY 5. WE’VE GOT TO BLOCK BETTER. COME ON, YOU GUYS. LET’S GO.>>I AGREE COMPLETELY ON THAT SETTING THE BLOCK. WE’VE SEEN THE UNION’S MIDDLE KEEP HITTING TOWARDS THAT LEFT FRONT CORNER AND SO WHAT COACH HARMS IS SAYING IS THE BLOCK IS TOO FAR IN AND THEY SHOULD BE A LITTLE FARTHER OUT AND THEN THEY’D BE BLOCKING THAT BALL.>>DIKES-NEW HARTFORD 47 WINS, 5 LAWSES, SECOND PLACE IN THE CONFERENCE TO UNION. UNION, 40-4. 8-0 IN LEAGUE PLAY, DEFEATED DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IN 5 SETS. DIKES WAS DOMINANT IN THE FIRST TWO SETS WINNING 18-25 IN THE FIRST SET. THERE’S THE SIDE OUT FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD AND MADISON, THE JUNIOR TO SERVE. AN AGGRESSIVE SERVE WOULD HELP HER TEAM HERE.>>THAT’S INTERESTING. I DIDN’T REALLY SEE THE BALL MOVING THAT MUCH. HER FEET WENT FOR THE BALL, THAT’S FOR SURE. BUT HER HANDS, I PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE MADE THAT CALL. HOWEVER, I’M NOT –.>>THE CALL WAS AN ILLEGAL LIFT AND TRUE CONTACT. THAT IT WAS NOT A CLEAN SET. 17 KILLS FOR BAYLEE PETERSEN. NOW SHE HAS A CHANCE TO SERVE. TRAILING BY 4 HERE IN THE FOURTH. GOOD UP AND UNION IS SET DEFENSIVELY, BUT DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WITH THE KILL. A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE IT GETS TO THE 25-POINT MARK.>>YEAH, IT REALLY IS. AND DEPENDING ON WHICH SIDE YOU’RE ON, YOU MAY FEEL A LITTLE LONGER.>>RIGHT INTO THE NET. THREE POINTS AND A SIDE OUT. HUDSON, WE TALKED ABOUT HOW DOMINANT SHE’S BEEN WITH HER 18 KILLS. NOW SHE’S SERVING. THE BATTLE OF THE NET. SLIDING, AND THAT’S THE FRESHMAN, JASMYN BUSH WITH A NICE ROLE PLAYER THIS YEAR. SHE’S HAD A NICE PERFORMANCE NOW AT 6′ 2”. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD TO THE OUTSIDE, UNION IS BLOCKED AND THE WOLVERINES WIN THE POINT.>>SO WHAT WAS CALLED THERE WAS KIND OF INTERESTING. SHE CALLED POOR CONTACT BECAUSE THE BALL DIDN’T HIT THE HAND OF THE BLOCKERS.>>UNION LEADS LEADING JUST TWO MORE POINTS TO FORCE THIS TO A FIFTH AND FINAL SET. ONE FOR DIKES, MAKING THIS A THREE-POINT SET. TIME NOW TO GO INSIDE THE UNION HUDDLE.>>ALL RIGHT. WHAT HAVE WE GOT, JESSICA?>>DO YOU WANT TO SPREAD IT OUT MORE?>>YEAH, LET’S SPREAD IT OUT A LITTLE MORE.>>WE WANT TO WIN HER FOR A ONE OR SOME IN THE MIDDLE.>>KEEP BAYLEE OUTSIDE.>>THAT’S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE IS THEY DON’T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH THEIR PLAYERS HITTING ALL ALONG THE NET UNTIL THAT GIVES THEM QUITE A BIT OF VARIETY AND FLEXIBILITY.>>I LIKE IT. THE COACH TAKING INPUT FROM HIS SENIORS. IT IS THE STATE TOURNAMENT. LET’S SEE HOW THIS UNFOLDS HERE. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD WINS THE FIRST TWO SETS, UNION WINS THE THIRD. YOU HAVE TO WIN THREE SETS TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. YATES MUST-WIN SITUATION FOR UNION. THEY LEAD 23-20, PLAY TO 25, WIN BY 2. WE’VE GOT OURSELVES A 2-POINT BALL GAME. NOLAN SET THAT BALL AND IT WAS KIND OF A QUICK REACTION. SHE KNEW IMMEDIATELY SHE WAS GOING TO GET CALLED FOR IT AND STARTED WALKING BACK TO HER SPOT.>>STRONG SERVE, NICE HALF AND THE WOLVERINES ARE RUNNING ON ALL CYLINDERS. 4-0 RUN FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. BACK PRESSED AGAINST THE WALL, THEY DON’T WANT THIS TO GO FIVE. SYDNEY PETERSEN HAS BEEN SERVING NAILS OVER THE NET. BEAUTIFUL UP. LAVENZ. AND A POINT. WE’RE TIED 23-23 IN THE FOURTH. THE SECOND AND FINAL TIMEOUT CALLED BY UNION. DIANE HARMS IN HER 14TH SEASON. LET’S HEAD TO THE UNION HUDDLE.>>KEEP TO THE OUTSIDE, WE WANT TO BE GOING, PURE TRANSITIONINGING EITHER CORNER. DON’T OVER ROTATE. STAY DOWN. DON’T OVERREACH FOR IT, OKAY? THE RIGHT SIDE’S BEEN HURTING US. MAKE SURE TO CLOSE THAT. HERE WE GO.>>TWO OF THE TOP PROGRAMS IN THE STATE OF IOWA, GOING TOE TO TOE HERE FOR THE 3A TITLE.>>I THINK ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS SHE SAID IN THAT IS HEADS DOWN. BACK ROW, IF IT’S TIGHT, DO NOT JUMP AT HER.>>THERE’S ANOTHER POINT AND THAT BRINGS A MATCH POINT. A 6-0 RUN FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. ONE POINT AWAY FROM A CHAMPIONSHIP HERE IN CLASS 3A. UNION GETTING THE SWING THEY WANT AND THIS IS GOING TO OVERTIME.>>IT’S A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING. THE HITTER WASN’T READY SO EVERYONE GOT OUT OF THEIR SEATS AND THEN THEY SEND A FREE FALL OVER UNION.>>UNION, STOPS THE RUN. BUT A POINT TO THE BACK ROW AND –.>>THAT’S BASICALLY WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, THE PLAYER BEHIND TAKES CONTROL SO SHE CAN SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING. THE PLAYER IN FRONT CAN’T SEE SO SHE JUST HAS TO HAVE FAITH THAT SHE’S BEEN CALLED OFF AND IT’S GOING TO WORK.>>POINT AGAIN FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD. INTO THE NET AND TAWS IT UP. AGAIN, SHE’S NOT PLAYING AT ALL EVEN. JUST PLAYED TEN SETS PRIOR TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT. 25-25, NEW LIFE AND NEW OPPORTUNITY HERE FOR LA PORTE CITY UNION, HAILEE BROWN. IT’S IN. IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN INCH OR TWO DEEPER, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN.>>WHEN YOU HIT KIND OF A HIGH-ARCHING BALL LIKE THAT, IT FOOLS THE DEFENSE INTO THINKING IT’S GOING OFF. MATCH POINT FOR THE THIRD TIME FOR DIKES-NEW HARTFORD HERE IN THE FOURTH. BLOCKED, POINT. DIKES-NEW HARTFORD IS YOUR CLASS 3A CHAMPION, KNOCKING OUT NUMBER ONE UNION AND GETTING REVENGE FOR AN EARLY SEASON LOSS.
