“Football comes after family” | This is Thorgan Hazard

Hello BVB fans! Hello Thorgan! You’ve been here
for almost five months now, and we’ve got used to seeing this, this, and even this. And we know you can
be charming too, but we’d like to ask a few more
questions, such as: Why do your new teammates
call you Toto? Lots of people have called me Toto
since I was very young. The last person who called me that was my former
coach at Mönchengladbach, Dieter Hecking, and some of my previous coaches
called me that too. It’s not the best nickname in the world, but you
don’t usually get to choose your nickname. Now some people will be wondering: Do you speak German?
-A bit, yes. But because we want to find out a bit more
today, we’ll do this interview in French. For example, we’d be interested to know
why you took shirt number 23. There weren’t many
numbers left over. Number 23 made me think
of Michy Batshuayi, even though he didn’t wear that
number when he was here. He came to Dortmund and
he did a very good job, so I said to myself: “I think that’s
Michy’s favourite number, and as everything went so well for him
here, I’ll take that shirt number.” We get on really well with each other, and
we’ve known each other for a long time. We used to play together in the
national teams at youth level. This summer the Belgian international cut
his long-standing ties to Gladbach. What does that mean for a father
of three young daughters? It’s not an easy decision to move
from one club to another. Your decision doesn’t
just affect you, it also affects your
wife and children. My wife knows how it is in football –
sometimes you have to move on. We really felt at home there, and now we’ll do everything we can to make
sure we feel at home here as well. For me, the most important thing
is that my family are happy. Football comes after that, and I think
everything will turn out well. We’ve found a nice house, and the
children will be starting school soon. We’ll get back into a normal rhythm,
which is very important. “A normal rhythm” – at BVB, “normal” means
a rhythm of three games a week. It’s a change for me. We lived in the Netherlands for four years
when I played for Mönchengladbach. This is a different environment
from what I’ve known before. We’ll discover more of the city, and we’ve
already done a few things with the kids. We’ve already been to the zoo and the park,
so we’ve done almost everything, right? My wife often goes back to Belgium as I’m away a lot,
which means I don’t see her all that often. It’ll get better when everything’s
settled down a bit more. So not everything has settled
down yet for him, but on the pitch in Dortmund our Number 23
seems to be going from strength to strength. He’s made a good start. See you soon! See you soon, Toto. It’s
great to have you here!
