How To Fly a Powered Paraglider Trike : How to Choose an Ultralight Trike

CHAD BASTIAN: Hi, this is Chad Bastian, welcome
to Expert Village. We’re here to talk about the trike buggy and PPG triking with paragliders.
Okay, in this segment, we’re going to be talking about choosing a PPG trike and why I developed
the trike buggy. A lot of PPG trikes or powered paraglider trikes, three wheeled or even four
wheeled quad trikes that are out there use the powered paraglider, and they use the harness
that’s attached to the powered paraglider. So, consequently, you’re sitting in the harness
of the powered paraglider at about this level here. It’s like you’re sitting in a high chair.
You have to get into the harness. It’s rather difficult and it is putting you at a point
where if you go over, your head is clearly going to hit the ground. You’re not really
very protected. I developed this because I wanted to use the regular seat in the trike
or in the buggy, the kite buggy, and sit down. Now, all I have to do to get into the seat
is fasten a simple seatbelt, tighten it up. I don’t have to put on a harness. My hands
have great mobility here. The throttle’s right there. The arm movement would be like this,
so I have real good movement. I’m off the ground. I have good protection here. The trike
is–if it does roll over, the point up here from my seat or from the top of the cage to
the front of the wheel, I’m actually inside. As long as I don’t stick my arm out, I’m going
to be protected by this cage that we have here. Lot of other trikes use cables to tie
the trike together and keep it taut, and that works perfectly fine if you have a really
low field, but if you have any grass that can grab the cable, that can slow it down.
The cable can also break or the cable can come loosened. I’ve seen that happen where
one side of the cable just let’s go and the wheel is just hanging below, so not a really
good situation. This trike is made of stainless steel and the back axle is very, very solid.
I’ve seen these trikes get lifted by the traction kites and dropped and they don’t bend at all.
They’re really very, very solid. So, it’s just an easy way to use the powered paraglider.
A simple powered paraglider motor attached to a kite buggy and just sit down and you
can take it right into flight.
