Kids, adults have chances to play cricket


NEW THIS MORNING – CRICKET IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR SPORT. AND NOW IT’S AVAILABLE FOR YOUTH IN CENTRAL ALABAMA. CBS 42 NEWS REPORTER CONAN GASQUE JOINS US LIVE WITH MORE ON A NEW CRICKET LEAGUE. CONAN? ART, A GROUP OF CRICKET ENTHUSIASTS IN HOOVER STARTED A CRICKET LEAGUE FOR YOUTH. IT’S CALLED THE LITTLE MASTERS LEAGUE, AND WE HAD A CHANCE TO CHECK IT OUT THIS WEEK. ABOUT 30 TO 40 KIDS ARE INVOLVED. THEY PLAY GAMES ON SATURDAYS, TYPICALLY AT DEER VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. BUT ON SUNDAYS, THEY ADULTS PLAY. THE LEAGUE’S FOUNDER IS PART OF THE BIRMINGHAM CRICKET CLUB. THEY COMPETE WITH OTHERS IN ALABAMA AND FLORIDA. SO THERE ARE MORE CRICKET OPPORTUNITIES THAT YOU MIGHT REALIZE IN ALABAMA. AND THE PEOPLE INVOLVED SAY THEY HAVE A LOT OF FUN WITH IT. One things it does is get us away from home the whole week, weekend rather. So that’s fun. But also it’s – you know, we had opportunities to play in India, and we are glad that after coming here, too, we are kind of continuing that passion that we have for the game. THERE ARE 16 TEAMS IN THE ADULT LEAGUE – SEVEN ARE FROM ALABAMA. AND THE BIRMINGHAM CLUB HAS A TOURNAMENT COMING UP IN MONTGOMERY THIS WEEKEND. THEY’LL FACE OFF WITH A TEAM FROM MOBILE.
