Preview: Former President Clinton to stump for Michaud in Portland

1BOX STARTING OFF WITH COMMITMENT 2014. RIGHT NOW, THE CROWD IS BUILDING AT THE PORTLAND EXPO FOR A RALLY, FEATURING FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON. WMTW NEWS EIGHT’S POLITICAL REPORTER PAUL MERRILL IS THERE LIVE. AND PAUL, THIS IS KICKING THE CAMPAIGN SEASON INTO HIGH GEAR HERE IN MAINE. YEAH, ELECTION DAY IS TWO MONTHS FROM THURSDAY AND MIKE MICHAUD’S CAMPAIGN IS BRINGING BILL CLINTON HERE TONIGHT TO HELP BUILD MOMENTUM. THIS EVENT IS FREE, BUT PEOPLE DID HAVE TO SIGN UP AHEAD OF TIME. THERE IS A V-I-P AREA. THAT IS $1,000 PER PERSON AND IT INCLUDES A PICTURE WITH CLINTON. THE 42ND PRESIDENT IS NOT BEING PAID FOR THIS EVENT, BUT THE MICHAUD CAMPAIGN IS PICKING UP THE TAB ON HIS TRAVEL EXPENSES. THE CAMPAIGN IS ALSO PAYING FIVE GRAND TO RENT THE EXPO FROM THE CITY FOR THE DAY. INDEPENDENT CANDINDATE ELIOT CUTLER’S CAMPAIGN RELEASED A STATEMENT TODAY ABOUT THIS EVENT. PART OF IT READS, “Whether it’s Clinton setting the table for Hillary’s presidential run or Chris Christie setting his own table for a presidential run, these visits are just more politics as usual. Clinton visited twice for Libby Mitchell in 2010 with no benefit…. The problems of Maine people will not be solved by an ex- President of the United States, by the Governor of New Jersey, or by their political parties.” THE LEPAGE CAMP IS WAITING UNTIL CLINTON SPEAKS TO OFFER THEIR INPUT. WE’RE EXPECTING 2,000 PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM AND BY THE WAY, IT’S NOT AIR- CONDITIONED. WE’LL HAVE A FULL WRAP AT 11. FOR NOW, WE’RE LIVE IN PORTLAND, PAUL MERRILL, WMTW
