Superior sophomore set to star for Husker Volleyball team

NIGHT. ONE OF THE BRIGHTEST STARS AT
THIS WEEKEND’S GIRLS STATE
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT WAS KALYNN
MEYER, THE SUPERIOR SOPHOMORE
PROVING SHE FEELS AT HOME IN
LINCOLN, WHICH IS A GOOD THING EVEN IF SHE’LL PLAY A DIFFERENT
SPORT IN COLLEGE. MATT LOTHROP HAS MORE ON THE
FUTURE HUSKER VOLLEYBALL PLAYE
MATT: IT’S A BUILDING OF BRICK,
BEAMS, BANNERS AND THE BEST OF
THE BIG RED. IT’S ALSO THE FUTURE HOME F
KALYNN MEYER.>>BEFORE THE GAME ESPECIALLY,
I’D BE LOOKING AROUND, JUST
SOAKING IT ALL IN, SOAKING THE
SCENERY IN. THIS IS WHERE I’M GOING TO BE
FOR THE NEXT FOUR OR FIVE YEARS. MATT: ONE DAY BEFORE HELPING
SUPERIOR TO THE CLASS C-2 STATE
CHAMPIONSHIP, MEYER GAVE THE
DEVANEY CENTER A GLIMPSE OF HER
ATHLETICISM, COMING JUST TWO
BLOCKS SHY OF A TRIPLE DOUBLE. BUT THE BASKETBALL WORLD KNO
OF THE 6’3” SHOOTER WITH A NICE
SHOOTERS TOUCH, WHO AVERAGES 20
POINTS A GAME. A HANDFUL OF POWER FIVE PROGRAMS
HAVE OFFERED THE SOPHOMORE A
SCHOLARSHIP.>>I THOUGHT BASKETBALL WAS
GOING TO BE IT FOR AT LEAST
THREE YEARS. VERY STRONGLY THOUGHT I’D BE
COMING HERE FOR BASKETBALL. BUT THEN, ALL IN ONE SUMMER, IT
CHANGED. MATT: SO INSTEAD, THE FUTURE IS
BLOCKING SPIKES, AND NOT SHOTS. PUTTING THE BALL OVER A NET
INSTEAD OF INSIDE OF ONE.>>DO I WANT TO BE IN A PROGRAM
THAT’S SUCCESSFUL, THAT I DON’T
HAVE TO PICK UP? BUT THE BASKETBALL TEAM IS DOING
VERY WELL RIGHT NOW, SO I COULD
SEE THAT IT WOULD BE A VERY HARD
DECISION IF I MADE IT THIS YEAR
OR NEXT YEAR. MATT: IN JUST THE PAST FEW
YEARS, WE’VE SEEN SOME CROSSOVER
BETWEEN THE VOLLEYBALL TEAMS AND
BASKETBALL TEAM HERE AT
NEBRASKA. BUT MEYER SAYS WHEN SHE GETS TO
LINCOLN THAT WON’T BE THE CASE. SHE WILL FOCUS SOLELY ON
VOLLEYBALL
BUT BEFORE THEN, SHE’D LIKE A
FEW MORE STATE TOURNAMENTS IN
VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL AND TRACK
AND FIELD. REPORTING FROM THE DEVANEY
CENTER IN LINCOLN, MATT LOTHROP,
